Recovering from a Major Wind Event in Ontario

Fulton’s Sugarbush and Maple Shop in Ontario Canada could not predict that a major wind event was going to cause severe damage to it’s sugarbush. The story of the storm serves as reminder of weather risk for maple producers and their response offers many learning moments for those who face an event like this in the future. Extensive damage occurred to mainlines and lateral lines across 75 acres of woods. Clean-up was extensive and took many months to complete.Before the cleanup began, however, owner Scott Deugo conducted a thorough assessment that resulted in a systematic plan to tackle the massive undertaking. An aerial drone survey was done to assess the magnitude of damage, and global positioning system (GPS) technology was used to locate damage on pre-existing maps of the pipeline system. Understanding the Types of Risk and Planning Forward

Uncertainty is a big part of operating a forest products or farm business. The risk, or potential for negative consequences, is likely to disrupt any business in both chronic small ways or major single instances. Risk can be managed in several ways. Some risks can be moderated, or made less, by changes put in place before the problems arise. Putting a back-up generator in place can moderate the disruption of a sudden loss of electricity. Avoidance is a tactic as well, especially when managers feel the disruption could be too difficult or expensive to recover from. For someone weary of price fluctuations in maple syrup markets, the decision to operate a tubing installation company or seasonal tapping service can keep them in the maple sector while avoiding

 the dynamics of maple syrup price risk.
